A guide to August Alaska trip planning
Fishing Lodge Home › Trip Planning › August Trips
August features peak fishing for pink, silver and chum salmon at our fly-in fishing lodge. August is one of the most popular times of the summer for fly fishing guests due to the diversity of salmon species combined with great trout fishing. Fast action for silvers and chum salmon in mid-to late August is an experience like none-other. We target both of these species with spinners, sub-surface flies and top-water flies. Bundle your August fishing package with a fly-out flight-seeing experience, helicopter glacier tour or bear-viewing adventure to round-out your ultimate vacation.
August Alaska Fishing
Early August sees big numbers of pink, silver and chum salmon running strong in our river system. It's a great time of the season for spin fishermen, fly fishermen, novice fishermen, kid fishermen, etc. to target a variety of salmon species in large numbers throughout the river system. Spin and fly fishing is most spot and stalk fishing as under clear-water conditions you can physically see all the fish you are targeting. In slack water areas off the main current, salmon will pile up by the dozens and sometimes hundreds. As king salmon start to settle into their redds to lay their eggs, hungry rainbows congregate in large numbers and can be easily targeted with pink bell spinners and egg-imitation flies. As the weather cools, northern pike action in August can be pretty incredible. Weed bed top-water fishing is a great side-trip in addition to river fishing for salmon and trout.
August Adventures
Although August is mostly fishing-focused as it is really an epic and dynamic time to plan a fishing lodge package with us, we do have lots of guests that are interested in adding on a few adventure activities before or after their stay with us. Some of these include a fly out bear viewing excursion from Anchorage, a 3-glacier landing helicopter tour, or an overnight glamping experience at our Solitude Island Retreat. Any of these are great add-on options for the month of August. If you have any special interests or bucket-list activities that would round out your vacation, please let us know! Some things we can accommodate while others you can be assured we have connections with someone that can help you!
August Weather and Trip Planning
August sees some of the most diverse weather of the summer, but overall it's much nicer and warmer at our inland location versus on the coast. Although temperatures in our area are still favorable, early mornings can be chilly with temps dipping into the low 50s and occasional 40s. The waning daylight adds to the cool down. Clouds become a bit more common than sunshine and showers are a more regular occurrence. Fortunately, theses conditions go hand-in-hand with great fishing. Be prepared for all conditions to assure you are comfortable throughout your day's adventure. Check out our suggested trip packing list for appropriate clothing and gear to consider. For fishermen, keep in the know when it comes to fishing regulations, appropriate licenses, etc. All fishing-resources can be viewed on our fishing guide page.
