July Fishing

The month of July sees a large diversity of fish species become available in our river system. July is the only month where literally all Pacific Alaska salmon species are present in our river at the same time (sockeye, pink, silver, chum and king salmon). Please be sure to visit our peak fishing calendar to see when you can expect peak fishing for each species. Northern pike in our nearby lake chain cruise the edges of weed beds and actively feed throughout the day making for great top-water fishing by spin or fly fishing methods. An occasional cool, cloudy day can really spark the pike fishing and should always be considered as an alternative fishing experience during your stay at the lodge. Trout fishing is also quite enjoyable during July as the ability to easily wade the entire river offers many new opportunities to access prime rainbow trout fishing habitat. Lower water conditions offer the best dry fly and mouse-imitation fly fishing opportunities of the summer. Higher water conditions see us transitioning to swing large streamers mid-river to trigger active rainbows.

July Weather and Trip Planning

The weather in July is typically fair, temps from the mid-60s into the 80s on the warmest of days. The first half of the month tends to be warmer and drier, whereas the second half of the month temperatures cool a bit and there is a greater likelihood of precipitation. Precipitation in the latter half of July is often welcome as river systems of Alaska tend to be at their lowest levels of the summer. Rain replenishes the river ecosystem, drops water temperatures and leads to ideal conditions to spark active, aggressive fish. As always, dress in layers so you can adapt your comfort level as weather conditions change. With 20 hours of direct sunlight, do not under-estimate the power of the sun! Sunburn is common, especially when on the river or lakes. Check out our suggested trip packing list for appropriate clothing and gear to consider. For fishermen, keep in the know when it comes to fishing regulations, appropriate licenses, etc. All fishing-resources can be viewed on our fishing guide page.
